Gewone melkdistel, Sonchus oleraceus L., is een met wit melksap gevulde algemeen voorkomende soort met stekelig getande sappige bladeren uit de Composietenfamilie. De stekelig getande bladeren hebben ertoe geleid om de plant “distel” te noemen, terwijl het witte melksap tot het gedeelte “melk” in de naam heeft geleid. Dit geldt voor alle Melkdistelsoorten. Het is een eenjarige soort.
